I was lucky enough to catch Blue State last summer at the Waterfront Film Festival. Charming, funny, and a little bit romantic, this overlooked film was my favorite of the festival.
Blue State has a fantastic premise. John (Breckin Meyer) is a John Kerry supporter that works his tail off on the campaign. Right before the election, he drunkenly boasts that if George Bush wins, he'll move to Canada. Of course, we all know how the election turned out. John's buddies coax him into following through on that pledge, and he actually convinces himself that moving to Canada is a good idea. John hangs up a sign for a travel partner (enter Anna Paquin) and before you know it, our angry Democrats are headed for Canada.
I was a pretty diehard Democrat when I saw this (that's another story) and I have to tell you - the slams on George Bush are right on target. Let's face it, he really bungled that whole Iraq thing, and the economy has certainly seen better days. I think that the politics of Blue State may have made this very funny comedy a hard sell to the studios. It certainly didn't do much at the box office. And that's a shame. On video, I hope this film will find an audience. It's cute and politically edgy.
