Finally - a movie about flesh-eating, mind-reading mermaids!

The special effects are great in this low-budget thriller that looks totally amazing. Rufus Sewell and Carla Gugino play Angus and Lillie, a couple of carnival con-artists in early 1900's Ireland in search of fame and fortune. When Angus stumbles upon a genuine mermaid he imagines that he's finally hit the jackpot. With mermaid in tow, the carnies hit the high seas for America only to discover that their cargo has supernatural powers and an appetite for destruction.

A great story and good acting help keep this creature feature afloat, and its fast pace is a refreshing change from most of the bloated scripts that come out of Hollywood. Stan Winston gets credit for the creating the creature who some have referred to as "Alien's oceanic cousin".

A rollicking good time. I even jumped out of my seat once or twice.
