I used to have a mullet back in the good old days. I am not ashamed to admit that and believe me, there were lots of us out there sporting the style that some like to describe as "all business on top and a party in the back". Hey, it was actually a popular style. But that was a long time ago and nowadays, if you have a mullet, you are just asking for trouble, folks. American Mullet examines this wacky hairdo and the folks still wearing them.
A mullet, if you don't know, is a hair style that was popular during the heydays of the 80's big hair revolution. Short on top and long in back, it quickly died as heavy metal bands like Bon Jovi and Poison lost their control over MTV (advantage: Real World). Country western stars adopted the style (Billy Ray Cyrus re-popularized the style so much that many refer to the haircut as the "Billy Ray") and for some reason, the mullet carried on. Lesbians in San Francisco (and in turn, the rest of America) also adopted the mullet as an acceptable hair style.
Folks from all over the country are interviewed in American Mullet about why they still have their hair cut in a mullet style. Guys say that chicks dig it, and lesbians say that chicks dig it, but you never hear straight chicks say that straight guys dig it. Country gals seem to gravitate to the "Billy Ray" and headbangers claim it draws gals (not sure about that one). The mullet gets a lot of disrespect in the normal, buttoned down world of business. For the makers of American Mullet, that's where the beauty lies: it takes a special person to wear a mullet, one who says "I don't care what you think".
American Mullet has a kind heart and doesn't really poke fun of those wearing the out of date hair style. Instead it chooses to glorify those that stick to their guns, and for that, this film should be applauded. Wear them mullets proudly, folks.
