Review by Scott Standish

Director James Foley has been all over the map for me. For every great film such as GlenGarry Glen Ross there is a debacle like Who's That Girl? And now, for every At Close Range (an excellent movie) there is a Confidence.

Confidence is a paint by numbers con man movie (which I usually love) but the plot lines and dialogue throughout are see through. Sure every character has an angle, but these are always right out in the open. You wonder how any of these crooks even made it to top to begin with. Dustin Hoffman makes an appearance as a bizarre sex maniac kingpin and at least he makes it a little interesting.

If you are looking for a great movie about con men running their games, check out the far superior House of Games, or even the underrated film noir The Grifters. Confidence is recommended for fans of Hoffman only and even then, you probably won't be too impressed with what you see.
