I actually have found the MTV show Jackass to be funny from time to time. The good old boys from Jackass beat themselves up with dumb ass stunts, like off of houses, fighting each other in department stores, or shooting themselves with stun guns. These guys fearlessly hurt themselves just for our enjoyment.
Is Jackass: The Movie weird? Yes. Is it funny? Sometimes. Is it a movie? Not even close. In fact, the funniest thing about Jackass: The Movie is the title itself. Any film that must add "The Movie" to the end of it's title is certainly in trouble right out of the gate, don't you think?
I have friends that love practical joke footage (ala Candid Camera). Some have even gone so far as to buy those crazy Just Kidding videotapes that you see hawked on late night cable TV informercials. You know, the ones where they pop out of mail boxes and frighten people? Funny to some and boring to others, this is certainly an acquired taste. Jackass: The Movie is pretty much the same kind of premise: tons of practical jokes and masochistic behavior, with no attempt at even piecing together a plot. Its just stupid practical jokes and dangerous stunts gone bad.
Johnny Knoxville is the lead Jackass and no we are not related. He has some charisma and he's been making small appearances in feature films lately. I think the guy has a future in Hollywood and wouldn't mind a new attempt from Knoxville, this time maybe with a plot attached? Why not give it a shot? If it sucks, then at least we can say "hey, they at least they tried".
Needless to say, if you like Jackass (the TV show) you will probably like Jackass: The Movie. But you would also probably like Jackass: The Opera. Lets face it, if you like this kind of thing, you're going to get a few laughs out of this. People in panda suits fighting through the streets of Japan has a certain attraction to it, I must admit. But if you aren't a fan of dangerous stunts and practical jokes, as they say, don't try this at home.
