Review by Scott Standish

Ouch. I had high hopes for Dirty Love, because I actually like Jenny McCarthy. She's funny, cute and has a very good sense of comedic timing. But this film is horrible.

Written by Jenny McCarthy, Dirty Love is one of those comedies that tries way too hard. The script is your basic romance where a girl gets dumped by her evil boyfriend, only to see that love has been under her nose the entire time. It's cliche, but with good writing and direction (Clueless for example) a film can overcome. Dirty Love is not Clueless, in fact it's not even close. Clueless did not have scenes of a menstruating woman spreading gallons of her blood throughout the supermarket.

Dirty Love is painful to watch. It's cliche, not funny and worst of all, boring.

Sorry to disagree- but I must... on ALL counts. Dirty Love was one of the funniest movies I have seen in quite a while- Sure, it all ends up in cliche-land, but for the large part, rather than subscribe to the genre of formulaeic "romantic comedy", Jenny McCarthy has more than redeemed herself with an hilarious, truthful, sometines gross comedy from a woman's perspective. And what a woman!!! As writer, director, and star, gutsy Miss McCarthy is fearless in tackling the themes of betrayal, friendship, sexual freedom, fishing(!!) and commitment.
The supporting ensemble are excellent- notably a culturally confused Carmen Electra, and philosophical,pornstar-like Kam Heskin, and Eddie Kaye Thomas is suitably loveable. If "something about mary" can do jokes about semen as hair-gel, then kudos to the girl who takes an embarrassing menstruation moment and take it to its riotously cringe-worthy limit. I dare say the film has a kind of dirty realism and immediacy that you see in a good John Waters flick- maybe a touch more meat-packing district than baltimore!
my rating- A
