Review: Steal Me (B+)

Steal Me (2005)
Directed by Melissa Painter
Starring Danny Alexander, Hunter Parrish, Cara Seymour and John Terry
MPAA: UR
Grade: B+

Review by Scott Standish

An unexpected surprise, Steal Me is a delight.

Jake is a 15 year old kleptomaniac that is searching for his mother. He has bounced from town to town and he can't seem to find a place to call home. Jake is caught breaking into a car, and after a fight, the criminal (Jake) and victim (Tucker) become friends.

Tucker brings Jake into his family and his circle of friends. The family treats Jake like one of their own, and he does what he can to fit in. However, in a small town, people talk.

The actors do a fantastic job in Steal Me. This is an excellent independent film with solid writing, acting and direction. Steal Me is highly recommended.

News: The War Within

We have the inside scoop on a very controversial film that is set to open late September - The War Within.

Written and directed by first time filmmaker Joseph Castelo, The War Within is the story of Hassan, (Ayad Akhtar in his debut performance), a Pakistani engineering student in Paris who is mistakenly apprehended for terrorist activities and forcibly interrogated by U.S. intelligence services. So shaken by the experience, he vows revenge and joins a terrorist cell based in New York City with plans to begin the ground war in the United States. On the morning the attack is due to take place, all members of the cell are arrested except Hassan and one other member. With no alternative and nowhere else to turn, Hassan must rely on the hospitality of his former best friend Sayeed, who is living the American dream with his family in New Jersey. Lying to his friend about why he is in the US, Sayeed helps Hassan get a job driving a livery cab which furnishes Hassan with the money he needs to start manufacturing explosives in the hope of achieving a smaller but still effective act of terror. With each day that passes, we witness Hassan’s religious beliefs as they clash headlong with his feelings for Sayeed’s sister Duri, Sayeed, and the rest of the family. What unfolds is a profound human and political drama as we explore Hassan’s motives as he struggles to carry out his mission.

News: Steal Me Opens Sept 9th

Cineville Films and Picture Entertainment Production has announced the theatrical release of an exciting new film, Steal Me. The film is directed by Melissa Painter and stars Danny Alexander, Hunter Parrish, Paz de la Huerta, and Cara Seymour. The film opens on September 9th in NYC and September 23rd in Los Angeles.

In Steal Me, writer/director Melissa Painter (Admissions, Wildflowers) has crafted a refreshingly honest portrayal of relationships - sexual and otherwise - around a 15-year-old kleptomaniac, Jake (Danny Alexander), who arrives in a small Montana town searching for his prostitute mother.

In the course of Jake’s troubled search for his mother, he befriends Tucker (Hunter Parrish), a corn-fed local boy who catches Jake red-handed stealing the radio right out of his truck.  After a foot chase and a brief scuffle, the boys ultimately become friends, discovering that each has something the other wants -- Jake has a quiet mystery and total freedom, while Tucker has stability and a happy home. At first, Jake brings Tucker out of his shell, convincing him to pursue his longtime crush, the sexually wise, Lily Rose (Paz de la Huerta). However, when Tucker’s family nervously takes Jake in and he begins to become deeply involved with the people of the town, things grow complicated.

News: Directors Label Volumes 4-7 Announced

The Directors Label returns in September with four new definitive collections from some of the world’s most talented and innovative filmmakers.

The Work of Directors ANTON CORBIJN, JONATHAN GLAZER, MARK ROMANEK & STÉPHANE SEDNAOUI will all be individually released on DVD September 13th, 2005. A boxed set edition containing the four individual titles will also be released simultaneously. All four of these directors have carved their own identity into the realms of popular culture, with their unique styles and approaches to the many different aspects of media, from photography to feature films, documentaries, innovative commercial advertising, and of course the music video.

PALM PICTURES launched THE DIRECTORS LABEL in December 2003 with a groundbreaking format showcasing the individual talents of three of the world’s most maverick film-makers, by mapping their ascendancy through the world of music and advertising. All three of these much lauded Director Series DVDs from the series’ founders — SPIKE JONZE, MICHEL GONDRY & CHRIS CUNNINGHAM — have been individually certified Gold in the U.S., U.K, Japan, and throughout Europe, reflecting the series’ transcendence from cult status into the mainstream marketplace. SPIKE JONZE’S DVD was recently certified platinum.

These DVDs are a unique director-created and compiled series featuring music videos, shorts and commercials, special features including interviews, alternate versions, unseen short films & documentaries, behind-the-scenes footage and commentaries from various featured artists and collaborators. They are specially packaged with never-before-seen photographs, storyboards, drawings and interviews and have helped define what is expected of today’s music DVD releases.

Once again these new collections provide an oasis of material, each filled with extras, exclusives, and special features that demonstrate the diversity and depth of the director’s work. All have been painstakingly assembled, commissioned and curated over the past 18 months by producer RICHARD BROWN for PALM PICTURES.

MARK ROMANEK (volume 4) has directed some of the most memorable music videos of all time. From the monochrome voyeurism of MICHAEL & JANET JACKSON’S SCREAM to the poignant and haunting image of JOHNNY CASH’S version of HURT, as well as BECK, DAVID BOWIE, KEITH RICHARDS, REM, LENNY KRAVITZ and MADONNA to name but a few. These videos have received numerous awards, including over 20 MTV VMAs, three Grammys®, a Country Music Association award, and three Billboard Music Awards. Two of his music videos have even become part of the permanent collection of New York’s Museum of Modern Art and in 1997 MTV made him the first director to be honored with their Video Vanguard lifetime achievement award. Here the DVD features special documentaries, rare director’s cuts, commentaries from pretty much everyone involved and a special film ROMANEKIAN, which features BEN STILLER, CHRIS ROCK and ROBIN WILLIAMS giving their unique perspectives on Mark’s work. He is currently working on directing several film projects following the success of his debut feature ONE HOUR PHOTO, which starred WILLIAMS.

JONATHAN GLAZER (volume 5) is a music video and commercial icon whose extraordinary work reveals his gift for intense visual ambition. After winning multiple awards for his music videos and commercials, he moved onto feature films and in 2001 released his debut film, SEXY BEAST, starring SIR BEN KINGSLEY and RAY WINSTONE, followed in 2004 by the sublime yet sensational BIRTH starring NICOLE KIDMAN and LAUREN BACALL. His commercials for the likes of STELLA ARTOIS, GUINNESS, LEVIS, BARCLAYS BANK and VOLKSWAGEN have turned adverts into high art perhaps best reflected in his GUINNESS ad SURFER—included on his DVD in a new extended version—being recently voted best ad of all time by the British Public. His music videos which include UNKLE, RADIOHEAD, JAMIROQUAI, BLUR and MASSIVE ATTACK have further showcased his ability to contort reality into baffling and ingenious new perspectives. Glazer’s DVD showcases his advertising, film and music video work to maximum effect.

ANTON CORBIJN (volume 6) is a name synonymous with many of the most iconic images of the last 25 years, from his massively acclaimed photography, the worldwide exhibitions of his work, his classic and highly sought after books, eye-catching album cover designs and videos for the likes of NIRVANA, METALLICA and most recently THE KILLERS. His long-term relationships with DEPECHE MODE & U2 are well documented, and his recent book of portraiture U2 & I is now on its third print run. He is currently working on directing his first feature film CONTROL about the life & death of IAN CURTIS of JOY DIVISION based on the book TOUCHING FROM A DISTANCE by DEBORAH CURTIS. ANTON’S DVD brings together an amazing array of documentaries, commentaries and extra footage that give an insight into the man behind the work.

Parisian STÉPHANE SEDNAOUI (volume 7), now based in New York, has become one of the most internationally renowned photographers and directors since his introduction to the world of fashion by JEAN-PAUL GAULTIER. At age 21, STÉPHANE worked with photographer WILLIAM KLEIN as the casting director and still photographer for his film LA MODE, MODE D'EMPLOI. By age 22 STÉPHANE SEDNAOUI was working full-time as a professional photographer. Since 1985 STÉPHANE has applied his unique photographic style to editorial fashion, celebrity portraiture, advertising print, and photojournalism, becoming one of its most celebrated players. His first major video breakthrough was the MTV award winning music video GIVE IT AWAY for THE RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS in 1992, perhaps their most defining visual moment as a band. He has since gone on to create classic music videos for the likes of U2, REM, NENEH CHERRY, ALANIS MORRISETTE and BJÖRK to name but a handful, each of which has brought an inspirational visual aesthetic to the song. His DVD features a host of special and exclusive material, including a brand new short film inspired by the song WALK ON THE WILD SIDE and featuring LOU REED (the first time ever for the song), plus new collaborations with BJÖRK and much more.

Review: Alf Season Two (B)

Alf - Complete Season Two (1987)
Starring Max Wright, Anne Schedeen, Andrea Elson
MPAA: UR
Grade: B

Review by Bobby Nashville

I always liked Alf, but after watching Permanent Midnight, I realize that Alf was basically the Muppets on drugs. And that's not a bad idea when you think about it.

Alf purists have come out against this DVD because it reportedly contains the edited, syndicated version. But as far as I can tell, these episodes (along with the DVD for season one) are the only ones available - so enjoy them while you can.

As most everyone knows, Alf was furry alien that was taken in by the kind Tanner family. He was nothing but a troublemaker, smart ass and comedian. The Tanner family called him Alf because it was short for Alien Life Form. Like most smartass aliens from the planet Melmac, he was lovable as all hell. He also spent alot of time trying to eat the Tanner cat.

Season two of Alf contained some very memorable episodes, my favorites being the Gilligan's Island episode and Alf's Christmas Special. Alf had a great season one and an equally stellar season two. Over all, this is a very decent collection for fans of the show.

Review: Hardcore (B+)

Hardcore (2004)
Directed by Dennis Iliadis
Starring Katerina Tsavalou, Danae Skiadi, Omiros Poulakis and Ioannis Papazissus
MPAA: UR
Grade: B+

Review by Sebastian Francis Kennedy

A gritty tale of two girls that were robbed of their childhoods, Hardcore is a bold debut from director Dennis Iliadis. Nadia and Martha are teenage prostitutes in Athens, Greece and they live for drugs, sex and the occasional psychological freak out. Martha enjoys her profession and has the drive to succeed at whatever she does. She brings her co-worker and lover Nadia along for the ride, but Nadia does not entertain the same lofty ambitions. In fact, Nadia's emotional state is in a constant state of flux, and at times, she claims to need the degradation that comes with her profession.

Hardcore is well acted, well directed and very well photographed. This is an impressive first feature from a director that we will certainly be hearing a lot more from. The film is not for the faint of heart however, as it realistically shows scenes of sex and violence. Hardcore is a stunning first feature and if you are in the mood for a gritty dose of passon, violence and disturbing violence - seek this one out.

Review: Ryan (A-)

Ryan (2003)
Directed by Chris Landreth
Starring Ryan Larkin
MPAA: UR
Grade: A-

Review by Scott Standish

Brilliant. Sad. Amazingly upbeat despite the tragedy within, Ryan is an amazing short film. This animated documentary clocks in at just under 14 minutes, and yet it tells a bolder story than most 2 hour long documentaries currently flooding the market. Ryan is a 3-D animated film about Chris Landreth's fascination with a down and out animator from the 60's, Mr. Ryan Larkin.

In Ryan, an animated version of Chris Landreth talks with Ryan Larkin about his career, his animated films, and where he eventually lost his way (both professionally and personally). Larkin's films are legendary. Ryan Larkin made incredible animated art pieces, full of psychedelic wit and imagination. Larkin was nominated for an Academy Award, yet his career went south as he started to lose his grip on his art.

This excellent DVD includes three of Ryan Larkin's original animated short films, a welcome bonus. An excellent documentary about Landreth and Larkin called Alter Egos is also an unexpected treat.

This is a highly recommended DVD, especially those with a love for animated film.

News: Buzz About Dirty Love

DVD Confidential has learned that there is quite a buzz about a new film called Dirty Love, starring Jenny McCarthy, Carmen Elektra, and Eddie Kaye Thomas (Finch from American Pie). Here is the synopsis:

Sometimes a girl has to get a little down and dirty before she can find pure love. In the slapstick comedy, Dirty Love, Jennifer McCarthy is gorgeous, goofy, and gross all at once in this hilarious take on one woman’s chaotic quest for true love. It’s a knowing, funny, trashy, guilty pleasure, in the spirit of Porky’s and National Lampoon, only this time, it’s through the eyes of one of America’s cover girls: Jenny McCarthy. Rebecca (Jenny) is devastated when she comes home one night and finds Richard (Victor Webster), her supermodel boyfriend, engaged in sexual acrobatics with another woman in their bed. To mend her broken heart, she takes a strange and wild trip of funny sexual encounters that includes putting basses in asses and pulling hanker-chiefs out. With the help of a bossy psychic and her off-beat friends, Rebecca finds that the path to true love is right in front of her.

Dirty Love hits the theaters Sept. 23rd.

Review: Memories of Murder (D+)

Memories of Murder (2003)
Directed by Joon-ho Bong
Starring Kang-ho Song, Sang-kyung Kim, Roe-ha Kim and Jae-ho Song
MPAA: UR
Grade: D+

Review by Sebastian Francis Kennedy

Billed as a thriller/comedy, Memories of Murder is neither. However it is fascinating to watch, like a trainwreck that goes on for 132 minutes. This overrated crime drama proves that horrible dialogue and poor acting can make for decent entertainment.

Based on a true story, Memories of Murder follows three policemen as they track a serial killer. Two are complete bozos (must be where the comedy is intended) and the other is a cranky loner sent in from Seoul. The police chief tries to keep the two on track but they keep spinning their wheels.

The screener version I watched was dubbed in English (never a wise choice)and I suspect that the translation was done by a six year old.

Review: Saturday Morning with Sid & Marty Krofft (A)

Saturday Morning with Sid & Marty Krofft
Review by Bobby Nashville
Grade: A

Rhino Video has released a nice collection of early Sid and Marty Krofft shows and this sampler contains the pilot episodes for seven of their best programs.

I guess I should point out that I was raised on Saturday morning television, big bowls of Captain Crunch and a healthy dose of Sid and Marty Krofft. Sid and Marty churned out some of the strangest children's programming this side of Rocky & Bullwinkle. Most folks don't know the names Sid and Marty Kroftt, but they sure remember their shows: Land of the Lost, Lidsville, Sigmund and the Sea Monsters (my favorite) and of course H.R. Puf N Stuff.

If you are unfamiliar with these shows, then you really need to check them out. A mix of live actors and tripped out puppet people, Sid and Marty's shows make Pee Wee's Playhouse seem completely normal. Talking flutes, pet dinosaurs, talking bugs & sea monster pals - Krofft's imagination knew no limits.

Saturday Morning with Sid & Marty Krofft is a classic collection of Saturday morning television history. Highly recommended.

Review: Cleopatra 2525 (B)

Cleopatra 2525 (Complete Series)
Directed by
John Laing, Wayne Rose, More
Executive Produced by Sam Raimi
Starring Jennifer Sky, Gina Torres, Victoria Pratt
MPAA: UR
Grade: B

Review by Bobby Nashville

I like to call this series "Mary Jane Girls In Space". Scantily clad girls in the future battle machines and weird robots called Baileys. Whatever. This is a completely stupid exercise in camp and bad sci-fi effects. I love it.

Basically, a stripper named "Agent 008, Code Name Cleopatra" went in for a boob job (her own words) in the 21st century, and woke up in the year 2525. She joins two sexy freedom fighters that are led by a mysterious voice. The voice guides them in their battles against futuristic machines. Seriously.

Silly, stupid, and very funny (although unintended), Cleopatra 2525 is tailor made for Mystery Science Theater style mockery. This series is a ton of fun.

News: Waiting Opens October 7th

Lions Gate has announced the release date for the new comedy, Waiting. Waiting, the comedy about frustrated waiters, stingy tippers and dicey food, stars Ryan Reynolds, Anna Faris and Justin Long as young employees battling boredom at Shenanigan’s, a generic chain restaurant.

A waiter for four years since high school, Dean (Justin Long) has never questioned his job at Shenanigan’s. But when he learns that Chett, a high school classmate, now has a lucrative career in electrical engineering, he’s thrown into turmoil about his dead-end life. Dean’s friend Monty (Ryan Reynolds) is in exactly the same boat, but he couldn’t care less. More concerned with partying and getting laid by underage girls, Monty is put in charge of training Mitch (John Francis Daley), a shy new employee. Over the course of one chaotic shift, Mitch gets to know the rest of Shenanigan’s quirky staff: Monty’s tough-talking ex-girlfriend, Serena (Anna Faris), Shenanigan’s over-zealous manager, Dan (David Koechner), and head cook Raddimus (Luis Guzman), who’s obsessed with a senseless staff-wide competition known only as “The Game”...

Featuring stoned busboys, unsanitary kitchen antics, and lots of talk about sex, Waiting… is a hysterical, behind-the-scenes look at the restaurant industry, and an affectionate ode to those lost, and thoroughly unproductive, days of youth.

News: Werner Herzog Film Opens August 12th

DVD Confidential has learned that Grizzly Man, the latest film from the world renowned director Werner Herzog, has changed its opening date. Grizzly Man is now set to open in theaters on August 12th.

In Grizzly Man, acclaimed director Werner Herzog explores the life and death of amateur grizzly bear expert and wildlife preservationist Timothy Treadwell. Treadwell lived unarmed among the bears for thirteen summers, and filmed his adventures in the wild during his final five seasons. In October 2003, Treadwell’s remains, along with those of his girlfriend, Amie Huguenard, were discovered near their campsite in Alaska’s Katmai National Park and Reserve. They had been mauled and devoured by a grizzly, the first known victims of a bear attack in the park. (The bear suspected of the killings was later shot by park officials.)

In Grizzly Man, Herzog plumbs not only the mystery of wild nature, but also the mystery of human nature as he chronicles Treadwell’s final years in the wilderness. Herzog uses Treadwell’s own startling documentary footage to paint a nuanced portrait of a complex and compelling figure while exploring larger questions about the uneasy relationship between man and nature.

Set in the 1930s on the beautiful shores of the Italian Riviera, Lions Gate Films’ A Good Woman follows the seductive Mrs. Erlynne (Helen Hunt), scorned by many as a ‘woman of ill repute,’ leaves New York for the Amalfi coast, where she hopes to find a new ‘patron’ among the vacationing aristocrats. The mean-spirited gossip stirred up by Mrs. Erlynne’s arrival isn’t enough to dissuade the jovial, kind-hearted Lord Augustus (Tom Wilkinson) from falling in love with her. But Mrs. Erlynne has already set her sights on the married Robert Windermere (Mark Umbers), a wealthy young American who falls quickly under her spell. Windermere’s faithful wife, Meg (Johansson), is herself distracted by the flirtatious overtures of Lord Darlington (Stephen Campbell Moore), a notorious playboy. But when she learns of her husband’s blossoming affair, Meg resorts to drastic measures, with unexpected consequences for everyone involved…

Brimming with sumptuous locales and sweeping romance, A Good Woman is a sophisticated ode to Wilde’s legendary wit and wisdom, beautifully directed by Mike Barker from a sparkling script by Howard Himelstein.

A Good Woman will be in theatres on September 16th.

Review: The Jerk (26th Anniversary Edition) (B-)

Jerk, The (1979)
Directed by Carl Reiner
Starring Steve Martin, Bernadette Peters, Mabel King, M. Emmet Walsh, Carl Reiner
MPAA: R
Grade: B-

Review by Bobby Nashville

One of my old school favorites, The Jerk is one of those "wacky Steve Martin films" that you are either going to love, or totally hate. Steve Martin's comedy has been a bit more refined these days, but back in 1979, he was truly doing everything he could to live up to the "wild and crazy guy" reputation.

The Jerk is full of silly one liners, wacky shenanigans and all around tom foolery. In other words, it's not the thinking man's comedy. Martin plays Navin R. Johnson, a weird, absurdly stupid white man that was "born a poor black child". The story is simple: complete idiot has nothing, idiot gets girl, idiot gets rich, idiot loses girl, idiot tries to get it all back. The storyline is actually not important. The entire film is a simply a structure that exists only for Steve Martin and Bernadette Peters to riff jokes over and of make eyes at each other.

I enjoyed watching the 26th Anniversary Edition of the Jerk again, but it is starting to feel a bit dated (as all wacky comedies do). For Steve Martin fans, this is a must own. For those that can take or leave his comedy, its worth a rent and of course, if you are not a Steven martin fan, you should probably steer clear.

One final note - this DVD contained a very cool feature where you can learn to play the ukelele. Cool!

News: Memories of Murder

Can't decide if you are in the mood for a comedy or a suspense thriller? Why not both! Memories of Murder is coming to DVD. DVD Confidential has the scoop:

Based on a true story, Memories of Murder is a suspense thriller offering an unusual fusion of death and laughter, while recollecting truly nightmarish events. In a small town outside Seoul, over the course of six years, 10 women were raped and murdered in a 2km radius. Korean society's first serial killer took the lives of victims ranging from a 71 year-old grandmother to a 13 year old schoolgirl. As time went on, the methods of the killer grew more bold and well-planned. One victim was stabbed 19 times in the chest, while another was found with nine pieces of a peach embedded inside her; but other than the victims themselves, the killer left not a single shred of evidence. Over 3,000 suspects were interrogated; at least 300,000 police took part in the massive investigation, but at a time in Korea when there was no profiling mechanism, nor any idea of preserving the crime scene for forensic investigation, a murder investigation depended mostly on the detectives' sense of duty and persistence. Kin Sang-Kyung and Song Kang-Ho play two detectives at the bottom of an ill-supported police force, who have only themselves to rely on to face this horrific series of events. The film reminisces about a time of innocence when the inability to comprehend such heinous acts led to unbelievable mishaps and harrowing nightmares. Both death and laughter infuse the "Memory of Murder"
